Integrated Natural Language Generation Systems

چکیده

Many existing natural language generation systems can be characterized according to their modularization as either pipelined or interleaved. In these separated systems, the generator is divided into several modules (e.g., planning and realization), with control and information passing between themodules during the generation process. This paper proposes a third type of generator, which we call integrated, that unifies the modules into a single mechanism. The mechanism uses a small set of orthogonal basic operations to produce planned and grammatical language output. Integrated systems are conceptually attractive and may support generation of pragmatic effects more effectively than other systems. After discussing the advantages of the integrated approach, we summarize GLINDA, an integrated generator currently under development at Carnegie Mellon. GLINDA is the generator used for narration and intercharacter communication in the Oz Interactive Fiction and Virtual Reality Project.

Two-Stage Stochastic Day-Ahead Market Clearing in Gas and Power Networks Integrated with Wind Energy

The significant penetration rate of wind turbines in power systems made some challenges in the operation of the systems such as large-scale power fluctuations induced by wind farms. Gas-fired plants with fast starting ability and high ramping can better handle natural uncertainties of wind power compared to other traditional plants. Therefore, the integration of electrical and natural gas syste...

Towards Automatic Generation of Natural Language Generation Systems

Systems that interact with the user via natural language are in their infancy. As these systems mature and become more complex, it would be desirable for a system developer if there were an automatic method for creating natural language generation components that can produce quality output efficiently. We conduct experiments that show that this goal appears to be realizable. In particular we di...

A Flexible Integrated Architecture For Generating Poetic Texts

In this paper we describe a flexible approach to natural language generation that employs a stochastic hillclimbing search algorithm and an integrated architecture. We then discuss the benefits of this approach over existing, informative, goal-driven generation systems. We choose the generation of poetry as our research task domain, as it is a prime example of natural language that demands the ...

Parenthetical Constructions - an Argument against Modularity

This paper presents an argument against modularizing linguistic information in natural language generation systems. We argue that complex linguistic constructions require grammatical information to be located in the same module, in order to avoid over-complicating the system architecture. We demonstrate this point by showing how parenthetical constructions — which have only been generated in pr...

Training an integrated sentence planner on user dialogue

An appealing methodology for natural language generation in dialogue systems is to train the system to match a target corpus. We show how users can provide such a corpus as a natural side effect of interacting with a prototype system, when the system uses mixed-initiative interaction and a reversible architecture to cover a domain familiar to users. We experiment with integrated problems of sen...
